01.03.23 - New exploratory project: Generating a high-resolution map indicating the nature of the soil

Generating a high-resolution map (1m) indicating the nature of the soil in order to know precisely the location of potential polluted soils for the prevention and management of soil displacement during construction work. It is new exploratory projet about to start.

The objective is to ultimately have soil maps that indicate the risks of chemical pollution at the cantonal level. These potentially polluted soils present a sanitary risk for the population, especially young children.

Current soil coverage maps often take a parcel-based approach and therefore lack precision in the residential areas, which are precisely the critical locations (as shown in the image).

The methodology developed should make it possible to reduce the time spent by public services on manually identifying these areas from aerial images and to improve cantonal inventories of potentially polluted soils.

A new challenge of using data science to accelerate the provision of essential information to address environmental issues, by leveraging existing geographical data.

This exciting new exploratory project proposed by the Etat de Fribourg - Staat Freiburg has just been validated by the STDL steering committee.
