09.08.23 - A Structured Approach to Assessing OpenStreetMap Data Quality

How can the quality of OpenStreetMap (OSM) data be assessed?

There are already some applications and functions to identify individual errors in OSM data. So far, however, no application exists with which the data can be checked in a structured manner according to standardised quality characteristics and thus provides the user with a qualitative classification of the data.

In cooperation with the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology HeiGIT, the Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie has developed a demo application that enables a qualitative assessment and classification of OSM data. The quality could be tested and qualitatively classified for various quality characteristics in predefined regions.

From the proof-of-concept it is deduced that an adaptation of the application to the later usage scenarios is necessary. The scenarios will be developed with the users from the German federal administration.

The aim of a research project on the quality assessment of OSM data is therefore to develop an application that checks and qualitatively classifies the data in relation to the application. The demo application will be successively developed into the final application in a user-oriented manner.
